On July 18, 2026, at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, a rocket called Vikram-1 lifted off from the launchpad.
Fifteen minutes later, it was in orbit.
Not a government rocket. Not an ISRO mission. A rocket built by a private Indian company in Hyderabad, designed by engineers who had left the security of the country's most prestigious scientific institution to start from scratch in a garage.
When Pawan Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka left ISRO in 2018, India had exactly one rocket company.

Today India has over 200 space startups.

Pawan Kumar Chandana did not look like a future rocket scientist.
He was a middling student who once scored 51 marks in mathematics.

He was ordinary in the way that most people who build extraordinary things are ordinary before the world understands what they are building.
He got into IIT Kharagpur. And once he was there, something shifted.
He discovered aerospace engineering.
Not as a subject. As an obsession.
The mathematics that had once seemed abstract and pointless became the language of something concrete and magnificent. The language of rockets. Of propulsion. Of the physics that explains how humans have managed to leave the planet they were born on and travel somewhere else entirely.
He graduated. He joined ISRO. He spent nearly six years working on the LVM3, the rocket that carried India's Chandrayaan missions to the moon.

The Engineer Who Taught Rockets to Think
Naga Bharath Daka took a different path to the same destination.
An alumnus of IIT Madras, Bharath specialised in avionics, the electronics that act as the brain of a rocket. Navigation. Communication. Stability. Mission performance.
Before becoming an entrepreneur, he worked at ISRO building the flight computer systems that told Indian rockets where to go and how to get there.

In June 2018, they founded Skyroot Aerospace in Hyderabad with a team of ten people and seed funding of 1.5 million dollars from Mukesh Bansal.

Building in the Dark
The early years of Skyroot were invisible to almost everyone.
No launch. No product anyone could see. No proof that what they were building would ever work. Just two engineers and a small team working on problems that had never been solved by a private company in India before.
They named their rocket after Vikram Sarabhai, the father of the Indian space programme. A deliberate choice. Not to invoke nostalgia but to signal continuity. They were not trying to replace ISRO. They were trying to extend what ISRO had made possible into a new era.

Here is what most people miss about the Skyroot story.
The rocket is not the product.

The world is running out of ways to get satellites into orbit quickly, affordably and on demand. Government rockets are expensive, slow and overbooked. The market for small satellites is growing faster than the infrastructure that serves it.
Skyroot is building that infrastructure.
Vikram-1 is designed to carry small satellites to low Earth orbit. Built with carbon composite structure and engines developed entirely in-house, including components made with 3D printing, the rocket is designed for fast manufacturing and frequent launches.

When Pawan and Bharath left ISRO in 2018, India had one rocket company. Today India has over 200 space startups.

Every name in the Skyroot story is a deliberate choice.
Vikram. After Vikram Sarabhai, who built ISRO from nothing and believed space was a necessity for a developing nation, not a luxury.
Kalam. After A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who told a generation of Indian scientists that ambition was their birthright.
Raman. Their liquid engine series, named after C.V. Raman, India's first Nobel laureate in science.
Dhawan. Their cryogenic engine series, named after Satish Dhawan, the ISRO chairman who stood beside his scientists after a failed launch, took personal responsibility for the failure and gave them full credit for every success.

In a space that has been historically dominated by companies from the West. With technology that most people in the fashion industry do not yet fully understand. Without the certainty that what I am building will arrive at exactly the right moment.
